Glass Cut Patterns

Complete Collection: every pattern in one download

Cut pattern for Diamond Lattice: 32 pieces of glass separated by lead lines on a square panel.
Diamond Lattice, the first of the 7 patterns in this pack, drawn at 14 in square: 32 pieces in 4 glass colors, the narrowest piece 0.8 in across and the tightest interior angle 45 degrees, both clear of the 0.375 in and 30 degree limits every pattern on this site is checked against. Every pattern in the pack is checked the same way at every size in its range.

Complete Collection bundles all seven patterns, beginner and intermediate: Diamond Lattice, Sunrise Fan, Ridge Line, Crescent Moon, Compass Star, Tulip Bloom, and Tiffany Arch Fan. Buying all seven separately would cost $63; the bundle is $39.

The shared size range across all seven patterns is 12 in to 24 in, set by Compass Star, the intermediate pattern with the narrowest individual range.

The download is a single ZIP with one folder per pattern, each holding a full-size tiled outline, numbered piece map, color reference, cutting-margin pattern, and glass and supply list.

What is inside

All seven patterns, the four beginner ones and the three intermediate ones: Diamond Lattice, Sunrise Fan, Ridge Line, Crescent Moon, Compass Star, Tulip Bloom and Tiffany Arch Fan. Each arrives as its own complete set, with pattern sheets, numbered pieces, glass list and cutting order, generated at the shared panel width you choose.

The shared size range

Because all seven are built at one width, the usable range is the overlap of seven individual ranges, which is tighter than any of them alone. Pick a width in the middle of that overlap rather than at its edge: it leaves the most margin on the three checks, and the checks are what keep a panel cuttable when your scoring is having an off day.

Working through them

Start with Diamond Lattice for straight scores, then Crescent Moon for the first curve, then Ridge Line for points. Compass Star and Tiffany Arch Fan are the two that punish accumulated error, so leave them until fitting a band of pieces no longer worries you. Tulip Bloom is the one where glass selection matters more than cutting.

Price

$39 for all seven, against $63 bought individually. No subscription, no expiry, and a pattern can be rebuilt at a different size within its declared range on request.

Set up the print, bench, and size checks

Choose one panel width before printing, then keep that width for the whole set. For a first run, leave at least 1 in of clear bench space around the paper on all sides, because the tiled sheets, glass, straightedge, and offcuts will move during cutting. Print one test square or one known dimension first if your printer driver offers a scale check. The scale setting must be 100 percent, not fit to page. A 1 percent print error becomes 1/8 in on a 12 in panel and almost 1/4 in on a 24 in panel, which is large enough to change the lead line and the border fit.

Tape tiled pages from the center outward. Align the printed registration marks first, then tape only one edge until the full outline is checked. After the outline is flat, place a metal ruler across the full width and height. If either direction is off by more than 1/32 in per foot, reprint before cutting glass. Do not correct a scaling error by trimming every piece by eye, because the error will not be equal on curves, points, and borders.

  • Use a flat board at least 4 in larger than the finished panel in both directions.
  • Keep one fine permanent marker for glass, one soft pencil for paper notes, and one red pencil for corrections.
  • Use a steel ruler for long straight scores and a small square for border pieces.
  • Keep grozing pliers, running pliers, light oil for the cutter, paper scissors, pattern shears if used, and a small brush for chips on the bench.
  • Reserve two trays or boxes, one for cut pieces that have passed the fit check and one for pieces that need recutting.

Cutting procedure that keeps seven panels consistent

Work from copies, not from the master print. Mark one working copy for cutting and keep one clean copy for layout. Number the glass pieces before any cutting starts. If you use pattern shears, remove the same channel width on every piece. If you cut directly from paper templates without shears, allow for the space taken by foil or came during fitting, and test that allowance on scrap glass before starting the first panel.

Cut large simple shapes first, then small points and narrow arcs. On each glass color, place templates with the grain or texture direction marked by an arrow. This matters on streaky, cathedral, and ripple glass, where a rotated piece can look wrong even when it fits. Leave at least 1/8 in between templates on the glass for a safe score path, and more on heavily textured glass because the score can wander.

Dry fit each panel on the clean layout after every 6 to 10 pieces, not only at the end. Push pieces gently toward the same reference corner each time. Measure the outside size after the first border run, halfway through the panel, and before soldering or assembly. A small error caught at piece 12 is usually one recut. The same error found after piece 60 can require several recuts because the gaps have been spread across the whole panel.

Working tolerances and figures to use at the bench

Check pointPractical figureWhat to do if outside the figure
Printer scale errorKeep within 1/32 in per 12 in of printed lengthReprint at 100 percent and disable fit to page
Gap between fitted glass piecesAim for about 1/32 in, with no tight pressure pointsGrind the high spot, not the whole edge
Border squarenessDiagonals should match within 1/16 in on a small to medium panelReset the border before adding more interior pieces
Minimum safe paper between close templatesAbout 1/8 in on smooth glassMove the template or cut the easier piece first
Dry fit intervalEvery 6 to 10 piecesStop cutting new pieces and correct the fit
Grinding passUse short passes of 1 to 2 seconds at a timeReturn to the layout often, because overgrinding is harder to recover

Use these numbers as bench limits, not as decoration rules. A panel can tolerate small visual variation, but it cannot tolerate trapped stress. A piece that must be forced into place is too large, even if the outline looks correct. A piece that rocks on another piece usually has one high point. Mark that point, grind only that point, rinse or brush off grit, and test again.

Frequent mistakes, recovery, and special cases

If a paper template is lost, do not trace from the already cut glass piece unless it has been checked against the clean layout. Trace from the numbered map or reprint the relevant page. Tracing from a wrong piece copies the error into the replacement.

If a curve breaks short during scoring, keep both fragments until the surrounding pieces are fitted. Sometimes the broken piece can still show the true edge needed for a recut. For inside curves, score in smaller sections and remove waste gradually with grozing pliers. Do not try to snap a deep inside curve in one motion.

If accumulated error appears near the final border, avoid trimming the border first. Check the last two rows of interior pieces. One overlarge interior point can push the whole edge outward. Correcting that point is cleaner than narrowing a long border strip and leaving the design off center.

For textured glass, score on the smoother side when possible and support the sheet fully on the bench. For mirrored pattern use, mark the face side on every template before cutting, especially on glass with different front and back surfaces. For mixed thickness glass, dry fit by top surface, not by bottom surface, because solder lines or came seating will show the height change. For more basic handling questions, use the FAQ.
